When you get home from a trip, the last thing you want to do is sort out your travel pictures! It just makes you sad that you’re home and not travelling! But it’s a big job, and best tackled when the adventure is still fresh in your mind!
The problem with the digital age of photography is the fact that you probably took about ten pictures when you only needed one! There’s nothing to limit you snapping away!
But the pictures need sorting, quickly. You’ll probably have a load of friends and relatives nagging to see them!
So, what do you do with your pictures?
Make Backups!
It’s vital that you backup your photos, anything can happen. If you’ve been somewhere you’re unlikely to go again, you really want to make backups! Make a couple, just in case, have online and offline backups.
Offline backup methods include:
- Hard drives;
- Memory cards;
- USB sticks.
Online backup methods could be:
- Google photos;
- Icloud;
- Photobucket.
Sort Your Travel Pictures
I tend to do a bit of sorting of photos as I’m taking them. If I take a picture and it’s blurry, I delete it straight away. I find it much harder to delete photos when they’ve been on my camera for a while!
So, first thing’s first, slog through those thousands of travel pictures! Get rid of the bad ones, the blurry ones, the ones where someone’s blinked etc. Zoom in on your pictures to check the quality of the photo, it may look ok when it’s small, but it might blur as you make it bigger!
After deleting it’s time to arrange your pictures. File them logically. I tend to file them in destinations and dates. Name each picture, so you know what you’re looking at (which is also why it’s important you sort the pictures sooner rather than later). Don’t just name them ‘sunset’ and the like though, be specific in the names, like ‘Sunset at Uluru’
Show Off!
Now it’s time to show the world your travel pictures! Use social media to share your pictures with friends and family, just make sure you add a caption so they know what the picture is of! Put up a select few, so people don’t get too jealous!
You may also want to print out some pictures. You don’t even have to just get a print now! You can make some awesome gifts, such as photo books and calendars. After my year out, I made my Great Aunt a calendar, as she doesn’t use social media. I put a picture of something I did on the corresponding month and she loved it!
You can also get coasters and mugs made, so why not decorate your coffee table with memories? Or maybe you got a really amazing photo, why not have a canvas made?
You can use sites like Printerpix for printouts, photo books and gift ideas.
No one likes to think about the wonderful adventure coming to an end, but unfortunately, it does. So don’t delay, get your travel pictures sorted as soon as you can! Then start planning your next trip!
