Pistyll Rhaeadr is a stunning waterfall. It is the tallest waterfall in Wales and the tallest single drop waterfall in the UK. The waterfall is located in the Berwyn Mountain range, west of Shrewsbury and Oswestry. You can get to both the base and the top of the waterfall and if you want a longer walk there are a few around the area! There’s something magical about waterfalls and Pistyll Rhaeadr is no exception!
Visiting Pistyll Rhaeadr
Pistyll Rhaeadr is open all year round! And there’s no charge to see the waterfall, although there is a charge for the carpark and donations are appreciated. The donation box is beside the gate. All carpark charges and donations go to the upkeep of the waterfall and conservation projects around the site.
Walks
There are a number of walks you can do around Pistyll Rhaeadr, whether you’re here for the waterfall or not. There’s something for every level of walker.
The Base
From the tearoom (Tan-Y-Pistyll) head through the gate for a quick walk to the base of the waterfall. Cross the iron bridge to the woodland walks and public footpath.
To The Top
This short walk only takes about 20 minutes, but there are a few alternatives you can choose. You will encounter some climbing, tracks or rough steps. The climb can be difficult in wet weather so make sure you are prepared! Once at the top you can see the valley below and if you follow upstream you will find other, smaller waterfalls and natural whirlpools. These are great places to have a relax after the climb!
The Berwyn Ridge Walk
This walk is 7 miles and includes energetic climbing, so make sure you have the right equipment! Once you reach the end you need to backtrack to return to Pistyll Rhaeadr.
The Old Lead And Silver Mines
This is a moderate 3 mile walk along paths. Leading from the base of the waterfall to the top.
Llyn Lluncaws
This moderate 4 mile walk takes you along climbing tracks. You walk via Llyn Lluncaws which means ‘Lake of Cheese’ where, according to Arthurian legend, a wise fish lives.
Refreshment
At the carpark near the base of the waterfall is a tearoom and restaurant, called Tan-Y-Pistyll which means ‘Little House Under the Waterfall’. Many of the original 18th century features survive in the tearoom, making it a cosy place to refresh. There is a log fire for those cold winter days and a picnic area for the hot summer days!

There are some interesting facts about the waterfall. For instance, Pistyll Rhaeadr:
- Means ‘Spring of the Waterfall’;
- Is the tallest single drop waterfall in the UK at 240 ft (73m);
- Is actually higher than Niagara Falls, although Pistyll Rhaeadr does not have the width or volume of water;
- Is one of the Seven Wonders of Wales;
- Is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)
The Boring Bit
- Although it is only a short walk to the top of the waterfall (unless you decide to do a longer walk) always be careful and ensure you:
- Wear stout and sturdy footwear;
- Have a map;
- Have plenty of water;
- Are prepared for all weathers (it is the UK after all…)
